Born out of a parking lot five years ago with just fifteen racers and a handful of spectators, Mission Crit has grown into one of the biggest and most exciting races in the crit calendar, with hundreds of racers and thousands of spectators. However, it’s not just the crowd sizes and local rider numbers that have grown. What started with a small bunch of dedicated San Francisco racers has blown up into an internationally recognised race field of men and women riders flying in from all over the US as well as Germany, the UK and Australia all competing for glory.
Coming just a week before the start of the Red Hook Crit series in Brooklyn, Mission Crit draws in all the big crit racers, many seeing this as a solid test circuit before Brooklyn.
2018 is the second year Knog has been involved in Mission Crit, and this year we were also sponsoring local Melbourne race team Hunter Bros Cycling. Hal and Ray Hunter are the Hunter Brothers and they race as a fivesome with Harry, Ferg and Martin.
On race day, all of the HBC riders put in a strong performance during the qualifying rounds to make it into the final along with the other top riders. The team raced well during the final with Ferg and Martin placing in the middle of the pack and Ray in the mid 30’s. Hal was hanging on to the front of the pack until a few laps to go and then had a serious stack, which unfortunately put him out of the race.
The podium finish wasn’t to be this time; however, this was just a warm up for the big one at RHC in Brooklyn.
